The coastal waters of Gansbaai region offer some of the best land-based whale viewing in the world, mainly from mid May to mid December. Walker bay is considered one of the prime viewing spots, offering unsurpassed opportunities for close-up viewing and photography from the cliffs, where the whales may approach to within 20 meters of the shore. Excellent viewing is also enjoyed from the cliffs at De Kelders, near Gansbaai especially when the wind blows from the south-east and the water is flat.
